Who is Sexfairy … and who she isn’t

I spoke to the woman known as “Sexfairy” last night. Linda Figueiredo turned in former KGO Radio host Bernie Ward for child porn. (She doesn’t live at the address in Oakdale noted on the police report any longer – good thing, because the unredacted report’s been posted on-line elsewhere. Given the national interest in the story, who knows what sort of attention she would have received.) Figueiredo is a thirty-three-year-old mother of three who told police in December 2004 that she sometimes logs onto the internet to discuss sex, using e-mail and live chats. Last night, Figueiredo declined my request for an interview, saying she’s been directed not to talk until the case wraps up.

From the transcript of the first chat session contained in the police report, it’s clear Ward and Figueiredo already had a relationship – he calls her “mistress”, she calls him “slave”. Ward looks to Figueiredo for approval and direction. (Ward’s lawyers argue he was role-playing as part of research for a book.) From the transcript, it’s Ward who brings up the issue of pictures, and he does so after nearly an hour of discussion about his own desires, fantasies and experiences. Ward uses the screen name “Vincentlio”: "I love trading pictures." Figueiredo as “Sexfairy” answers, "And why haven't I gotten any pics, slave? Send me some."

Ward sends several pictures – one of a woman and two children. Ward describes her as a mother in her late thirties, she's topless. He says the naked boy is 14, that the girl wearing clothes is 12. They're all touching in a sexual way. "Sexfairy" writes, "brb" – be right back. A half hour later, she's on the phone with police.

Now, Linda Figueiredo might not be talking, but her estranged husband told me an FBI agent came by their out-of-state home last summer, to confirm Linda would have to testify if the case went to trial. Chris Figueiredo said Linda’s experience with Ward and the child porn “scared us. I don’t know how people can sit on the internet and do what he did.” Chris Figueiredo told me after Linda contacted police (they told her to keep in contact with Ward, to help build the case), she received more child pornography from Ward.

Ward was a priest for less than two years in the 1970’s. Given the accusations against him, we were curious why he left the church. Ward was ordained into the Society of the Precious Blood’s Pacific Province, based at Santa Rosa’s Cardinal Newman High School at the time. I received an e-mail today from the Society of the Precious Blood’s headquarters in Dayton, Ohio:

“Less than two years after his ordination September 10, 1977 with the Society of the Precious Blood, Province of the Pacific, Bernard Ward came to the conclusion that he was spiritually and vocationally ill-prepared for the demands of priesthood and unwilling to accept those responsibilities. He also identified that he was not called to sacramental ministry in the church. He requested to be released from the Society of the Precious Blood. The Society of the Precious Blood granted his request. Mr. Ward married in 1981. While Mr. Ward struggled with authority in the Province, there is no record nor indication of inappropriate behavior with minors nor other adults. The Society of the Precious Blood, Province of the Pacific was suppressed as a province in 2006 due to lack of members.”

Some people from across the country criticized us for not identifying Ward as a liberal. Two points – viewers in the Bay Area know Ward and his political beliefs. It’s unnecessary to label him. Secondly, his political viewpoints are not relevant to the charges against him.

A few people who posted comments on the I-Team page apparently ran a search on Linda Figueiredo’s name, and came up with a writer/producer from television and film. That’s not the same person involved in this case.

As for his future at KGO Radio, it’s not looking good. General Manager Mickey Luckoff was quick to get on the phone with me in January to say he wanted Bernie back on the air as soon as possible. Now, Luckoff’s not returning my calls.

By the way, Bernie Ward’s friends and fans started a website when he was indicted in December, to support him and to raise money for his defense. Shortly after our investigation aired last week, most of the site was taken down. Now, it’s completely off-line.

Why is it not necessary to report Bernie's political beliefs? The past several controversies have involved conservatives. In those cases, the crux of the story was the irony of moral inconsistencies - Larry Craig in the bathroom, Rush Limbaugh on drugs, numerous evangelical figures in illicit affairs, etc. In each of these cases, the conservatism was the relavent issue.

This story about Bernie is important for the same reason. It is a liberal icon that was outed. Someone that hosted a show called "Godtalk" and purportedly speaks in the best interest of the children on his radio show.

The lack of coverage on this issue by the media, combined with the effort by local media personalities to cover for "Bernie" is predictable. The question that these apologists should ask themselves is: "Am I being true to myself and my profession?"

Obviously the fed judge unsealed the indictment a few weeks after a www.sfgate.com online poll was taken in which 57% voted "no" to the question: Was KGO right to fire BW? so by having the Oakdale police report open to the public, the fed judge by unsealing the indictment killed off any chance of KGO ever bringing back BW. So even if BW can get the charges dismissed in June, he's finished as a talkshow host and he's damaged his family just by mentioning his most private fantasies that he never had a clue would get published.

When Dan's story was first published here, I read a comment on here (on another group of comments at the link below) that did exactly that. Some damn fool was trying to smear/taint the entire City of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area because of what was written about ONE man (Bernie Ward). At the time, I thought: how intelligent is that? It ain't. How would you know whether Linda Figueiredo, her husband or her parents are documented or undocumented residents? And why would you make that assumption or put that out there? I have read nothing about that anywhere.

Why would he tell the subject he was a reporter (had to cover a speach by the Govenor, answered to his editor, etc.) while was posing, uhem, undercover? Did he really expect to trap her in some sort of hypocritcal behavior at that point? Why is this 33 year old mother of 3 (who really does have some time on her hands) a target for his supposed book?
