Managers from the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary came to Peter Klimley in May, asking him to share his permit for the study of Great White Sharks with a researcher from San Diego, Michael Domeier. Klimley turned them down flat because he is critical of Domeier's techniques. Maria Brown, Superintendent of the Farallones Sanctuary, gave Domeier a permit anyway. And in our interview for tonight's report, Brown told me she had never heard any criticism of Domeier's work, before she approved his trip to the Farallones two weeks ago. Clearly, a discrepancy.

Critics of Lake County Sheriff Rodney Mitchell say the poster outside his office door shows an insensitivity to the use of force. But, the main complaint from three current and former officers in his department say that racial profiling and discrimination are systemic problems there.
Late today, the sheriff sent two e-mails addressing some of the concerns raised in our report. His basic point -- arrest records show that Hispanic people are not arrested at a disproportionate rate by his deputies. I wanted you to see his e-mails in full.
*** Update Sunday, November 15th, 8am: There is an article in a Lake County newspaper that inaccurately reports there is no Department of Justice investigation. As we reported, DOJ confirms they are investigating; it's at a "preliminary stage ... pattern and practice investigations can take years." ***

This is the document that got us started on tonight's story. We found it in a stack of papers we received in response to a public records act request related to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell's travel expenses. It made us wonder, if the Department of Education would spend $273,761.31 on a CHP bodyguard for O'Connell in one year alone, how much was the state paying to provide personal security details for other state officials?
